Spider bite puts Tong in hospital

Adam Tong’s hopes of making his Bayswater City debut this weekend were almost dashed by the most unlikely injury.

Tong, who moved from Balcatta recently, had his sights set on a place in the Bayswater side for Saturday’s trip to Rosalie Park to take on Subiaco.

But a bite from a white-tailed spider resulted in the 33-year-old defender spending three days in hospital and facing the prospect of plastic surgery.

He will find out tomorrow if he requires another operation after doctors removed a section of his arm to fight the infection caused by the bite.

“I was hoping I would be training on Tuesday and Thursday to give myself a chance for Saturday’s starting XI,” Tong said.

“I’ve only had one major injury when I broke my tibia and fibula. But, touch wood, I don’t pull hamstrings, I don’t get dead legs and I don’t have bad calves or anything like that."

Tong is likely to be included in coach Chris Coyne's squad but expects only to be on the bench.

“There’s always going to be people pushing for spots in the team wherever you are,” Tong said. “Bayswater have conceded seven goals in 11 games so that shows the team as a whole defends very well and I’ve got to work even harder to get in the team.”

Tong was grateful to his former club for their support during the five and a half years he spent with the Grindleford Reserve side.
