NPL WA Preview

Bayswater City stand on the cusp of clinching the inaugural National Premier Leagues WA league title heading into a tense final round of the regular season tomorrow.

City, who are away to Sorrento, are two points clear of Perth SC, who travel to Dalmatinac Park to take on Cockburn City.

There are numerous permutations but if Perth fail to win against Cockburn the league title will be Bayswater’s, while City will also be assured of top spot, regardless of results elsewhere, if they beat Sorrento.

The league winner will represent WA in the National NPL Finals Series next month.

Bayswater were busy midweek taking on Melbourne Victory in a Westfield FFA Cup Round of 32 match and coach Chris Coyne believes his side will take momentum from the game, despite losing 2-0 to the Hyundai A-League heavyweights.

“I’m sure if they roll with the same conviction, capacity and hunger to put up a fight against a team, they’ll have no issues,” Coyne said.

Perth, who have won their past six matches in a storming finish to the season, will have their fingers crossed that fourth-placed Sorrento can cause an upset to open the door for a last-gasp grab for the league title.

But Cockburn City coach Mark Anthony said his side was out to finish the season on a high after last weekend’s 4-1 win over Inglewood United.

“Although we’re out of top-four contention now, we’re very conscious of our attitude at the club and we don’t approach any game as a dead rubber,” he said.

“We needed to take some form into that (Perth) game to have a chance… that’s exactly what we’ll be doing and we’ll go out there and try and win the game.”
