Brisbane silence Lions' roar

Stirling Lions’ hopes of a fairy tale start to the Westfield FFA Cup came undone in their Round of 32 match at the WA Athletics Stadium tonight as Hyundai A-League champions Brisbane Roar scored a 4-0 victory.

The Lions held their own in the first half and had the first genuine opportunity when Hayden Doyle’s shot hit a post after just 11 minutes. But Henrique opened the scoring for the visitors in the 31st minute with a close-range overhead kick.

Stirling refused to buckle, though, and they went into the second half with just a solitary goal deficit.

But Brisbane, replete with stars such as Thomas Broich and Jade North, stepped on the gas after the break to sweep to victory.

Corey Brown doubled the advantage in the 55th minute before Matt Smith, cousin of Stirling’s Rikki Smith, found the net in the 63rd minute.

Substitute Jean Carlos Solorzano bagged a fourth goal in the 68th minute but Stirling rallied to ensure the score blew out no further.

FFA Cup action continues at the WA Athletics Stadium tomorrow night (Wednesday, August 20) when Bayswater City take on Melbourne Victory.
