Tradition still strong for Lions, Athena

Former Perth Glory midfielder David Micevski accepts the rivalry between his current club Stirling Lions and Floreat Athena may have lost some of its historic intensity but there will still be plenty at stake when the teams clash at E&D Litis Stadium on Sunday.

The match will complete a weekend of fixtures in the National Premier Leagues WA Rivalry Round, which was established this season to emphasise some of the game’s derby matches and to create new traditions around others.

For Stirling, whose history is tied to the Macedonia community, and Floreat, which was formed by members of WA’s Greek population, the match represents an opportunity not just to get three points but also to claim bragging rights.

“The rivalry will stick around forever,” Micevski said. “It’s one of those things where we definitely lift for that game and hopefully we can get a bigger crowd than usual.”

Stirling, who have qualified for the inaugural Westfield FFA Cup, are in fifth place on the National Premier Leagues WA table after an emphatic 5-1 win over Perth Glory last weekend.

Micevski’s brother Daniel scored twice in the rout with Dean Evans, Hayden Doyle and Rikki Smith also chipping in with goals against a Glory side who had hit the front through Slobodan Vulin.

Floreat will also go into the match in a hungry mood after scoring a 4-1 win over ECU Joondalup last weekend.

They will also be motivated by Stirling’s recent successes, according to Callum Fransz.

“We lost to them last time (in the league) and we got knocked out of the cup by them when we were up at half-time, so there’s a lot of motivation to get them back,” Floreat’s Fransz said.

“And the Rivalry Round is a great way of keeping it exciting and keeping traditions alive.”
