Sorrento on high for Battle of the North

Sorrento will go into this weekend’s Rivalry Round clash with ECU Joondalup on a high after scoring an important victory away to Perth SC at the weekend.

Goals from Brodie Martin and Chris Reid gave Sorrento a 2-1 win over Perth, whose goal was scored by Mark Doninger.

ECU suffered a 4-1 loss to Floreat Athena but Sorrento’s Jason Mirco will not be taking anything for granted at Percy Doyle Reserve on Saturday (kick-off 3pm).

“It’s probably the best rivalry in the league,” he said of the Sorrento-ECU Joondalup derby. “Both teams are playing attacking football so it should make for a good match.”

Mirco acknowledged the off-field camaraderie between players from both clubs but said: “as soon as you cross that line, friendships go out the window.

“It’s definitely one game our boys are up for and I know they will be as well.”

ECU striker Danny Dixon, who played at junior level for Sorrento, expected another typically feisty northern derby.

“They’re always hard games because everyone loves to beat their rivals,” he said. “Sorrento is the closest club to us and if you’re from Joondalup you definitely see it as a rivalry match.”

Sorrento scored a 3-1 victory over ECU last time the teams met.

Joondalup slipped to seventh on the table as a result of their defeat to Floreat, while fourth-placed Sorrento are just five points adrift of league leader Bayswater City.
