Perth Soccer Club will battle for the inaugural Gareth Naven Cup, presented by Macron, on Saturday in its National Premier Leagues WA clash with Perth Glory.

Both clubs have agreed to honour Naven, who captained Perth SC before becoming Glory's first ever skipper, when the two sides play in the NPL.

Macron, the official apparel partner of both Perth SC and Perth Glory, has sponsored the cup.

The cup winner will be determined by aggregate scores during the home and away season.

Perth SC and Glory drew 1-1 in round one of the NPL this season, so Saturday's game at Dorrien Gardens will determine this year's winner.

Perth Glory members with also benefit from half price entry ($5) into Dorrien Gardens on Saturday. Glory members will have to produce their 2013/14 membership pass at the gate to receive discounted entry.

Perth SC President Gary Marocchi, the inaugural coach of Perth Glory, said the two clubs had a strong association since Glory's arrival on the national stage, with several Perth SC players moving on to represent Glory at both senior and junior level.

Perth SC has provided 19 players this year for the Perth Glory NPL teams from under 12 to 16.

Marocchi said there was no one better than Gareth Naven to signify the relationship between the two clubs, and it was an honour to name the cup after him.

Naven played 143 National Soccer League games for Glory, which included being part of two premiership winning teams and named the Most Glorious Player in 1999/2000. He was the first Perth Glory Life Member in 2004.

Before his stint with Glory, Naven was a key player in Perth SC's five consecutive championships from 1989 to 1993, and saw out his playing days with the club after retiring from the NSL in 2002. Naven collected seven League, six Top Four, five Night Series and one Cup winners’ medals with Perth SC.

"Gareth Naven was the heart and soul of Perth SC in the early 1990s, just as he was as captain of Perth Glory in the National Soccer League," Marocchi said.

"Perth Glory provided a pathway for Gareth and many other Perth SC players to shine on the national stage, and it continues to do so today for our former juniors such as Matt Davies.

"Gareth Naven was fiercely competitive on the field and always gave you 100 per cent passion and commitment, whether it was in the Azzurri or purple shirt.

"Hopefully, we will see something similar on the park on Saturday and our boys and Glory put on a great game for one of the legends of WA football.

“I encourage all Perth SC and Perth Glory members and supporters to get to Dorrien Gardens on Saturday to honour one of our all-time greats.”
