Sorrento too strong for Subi

Report by Kalon Harrison

Sorrento co-coach Jamie Harnwell said the confidence of scoring the first few goals helped his side control the game in a 4-2 win against Subiaco at the WA Athletics Stadium.

“Suddenly you start wanting the ball more and you want to play, so that helped,” he said.

“We pushed an extra player up front and they had to come and press us which gave us more room to play once we broke the press.”

Sorrento opened the scoring in the 32nd minute through Todd Harnwell who read a clever cross by Sean Canham to flick a header past Sam Stone and into the back post.

Subiaco came out and pressed right from the restart which opened the game up for the away side who had their second five minutes into the second half.

Reece Vittiglia scored his first of a brace after picking up a loose ball in the penalty area and slotting past Stone with a clinical finish.

Vittiglia scored again 11 minutes later in the 61st minute when a long throw was flicked on by Steve McDonald to Todd Harnwell who showed good strength to hold the ball up with his back to goal, then laying the ball off for the right winger to convert.

Subiaco pulled one back in the 72nd minute through Jordan Rhodes who received a clever backheeled pull back from Guy McDonald and slotted past Curtis Aspden calmly.

Sorrento restored their three goal lead through Canham who hung up at the back post to nod home a pinpoint Vittiglia cross in the 90th minute.

With possibly the most impressive goal of the game left until last, Nathan Diaz beat a couple of defenders and curled the ball into the top corner from 20 yards out, but unfortunately it was too little, too late for Subiaco.

Ian McMurray said his young teammates will learn from games like this and will motivate them to improve.

“Every game we are getting stronger and gaining confidence,” he said.

“We created enough chances to still be in the game going into half time. We need to keep learning and keep progressing as we are.”

The result keeps Sorrento five points behind NPL WA leaders Bayswater and Subiaco remain on the bottom of the table.
