Coach Talk: the men who matter - Round 2

Perth Glory coach Scott Miller has lauded ECU Joondalup for their style and quality ahead of tomorrow’s National Premier Leagues WA clash at ECU Football Stadium.

Miller’s Glory NPL side got off to a solid start with a 1-1 draw against Perth last week and he knows to expect a similarly close-fought contest against ECU.

“Players like Tommy Amphlett, John Higgins and Andy Higgins are proper footballers and (coach) Dale McCulloch loved knocking the ball around so that’s what I expect from them,” Miller said.

“We’ve got a few Joondalup lads in the team so they’ll be pumped for it. I know the older boys up there have been winding them up but it’s all in good fun and it’s always a good atmosphere at Joondalup.”

At Intiga Stadium, Inglewood United coach Graham Normanton expects an improved performance from his side against Sorrento.

Inglewood were beaten 3-0 by Floreat Athena last week in a game where Normanton felt “everything” went wrong.

“It was all a bit of a fizzer,” said Normanton, who is on the cusp of signing the A-League’s youngest player Teeboy Kamara, who was just 15 when he made his debut for Adelaide United in 2011.

Armadale coach Lee Bamber conceded he knew very little about Subiaco ahead of tomorrow’s match at Alfred Skeet Reserve.

“I expect it to be a harder game than against Bayswater to be honest,” said Bamber, whose team were unlucky in a 1-0 defeat last week. “We are under no illusions and need to carry the same level of intensity from last week into the match against them.”

Subiaco coach Gerry McEwan said he had only scant knowledge of Armadale, too.

“I’ve only seen them in action on the NPL WA Highlights Show,” he said. “They look to have plenty of pace up front and we know it will be tough.”

Stirling Lions stars Daniel Micevski, Phil Arnold and Danny Milne will undergo match-day fitness tests before tomorrow’s match against Cockburn City at Macedonia Park.

Coach Gary Williams expected a tougher contest than the Lions experienced in their last meeting with Cockburn.

“We beat them a few weeks ago in a pre-season friendly 6-0 but I’m not anticipating that kind of result again,” Williams said.

Cockburn coach Marc Anthony, whose team drew 3-3 in a thrilling opener against ECU Joondalup last week, is confident of a much better showing from his side.

“They gave us a bit of a touch-up but we are confident of a good performance,” he said. “I was happy with how we started last week but Joondalup were way better in the second half, so I was happy with the point with how the other results went.”

On Sunday, Bayswater City will aim to build on a fortunate win over Armadale when they take on Balcatta at Frank Drago Reserve.

City coach Chris Coyne, who was indebted to Danny Dixon for last weekend’s 1-0 victory, felt Armadale had deserved a draw in a game of missed chances. City welcomes back former Perth Glory star Todd Howarth and Paul McCarthy to the squad.

Balcatta coach Ramon Falzon will be without the suspended Kris Gate, who was sent off in last weekend’s 2-1 loss to Sorrento.

Falzon said of Bayswater: “They beat us 5-0 in the Night Series and the result says it all. This time we want to put our stamp on the game and put in a consistent performance.”

Floreat Athena coach Chris Barbas will have a selection headache with a full squad to choose from ahead of their match against Perth at E&D Litis Stadium on Sunday night.

Ashley Corker returns from suspension and the entire team has been on the training track this week.

Perth coach Taki Nicolaidis will inject former Newcastle United player Mark Doninger into his starting XI after he made his debut off the bench last week. Doninger played in Scandinavia with Perth captain Clark Keltie, who returns to the squad from suspension.

Luke Njegich will be out for up to a month due to injury.
