Cornerstone Giants opened their season with a convincing 6-3 win against the Vasse Ravens at Churchill Park on Saturday in the under 13’s Premier League.

The Giants started well with some good passing through the central corridor, and scored within the first 10 minutes as Jared Brough slotted the ball home from close range. By half time, the Giants were ahead 4-0, with as many goal-scorers. Callum Ferrity and Lehan Ackerman combined well, whilst Morgan Hughes saw a lot of the ball down the right wing. Vasse came very close to scoring on at least 3 occasions in the first half, including hitting the post from a well taken corner kick.  If not for some excellent play by Jack Wallace at left fullback and some solid defense from Josh Riches, the scoreline may have been a lot closer at the break.

In the second half, the Ravens were more determined and more attacking, showing a never give up attitude, which will serve them very well this season. A trial of players in different positions backfired somewhat for the Giants, as Vasse scored 2 goals in the first 8 minutes, and gave Caleb Hendry the opportunity to make several good saves in goal. With regained composure, Cornerstone moved the ball forward with greater purpose over the remaining time, finding the net twice more before the final whistle.

So a great start for the Giants to season 2011, but also a strong performance from the Ravens in what was a highly enjoyable game to watch.
