TWO Logan youngsters are being piloted to Australian football success on the back of AFL QueenslandâÂÂs Female Football Academy Camp.
Natalie Barnett, of Jimboomba, and Browns Plainsâ Teneal Lyons were both awarded scholarships for the nine-person camp, aimed at developing the stateâÂÂs female footy talent.
The squad, assembled for a second year, consists of players aged 15-21 and trains once a month in search of a potential Queensland underage call-up.
Female participation co-ordinator Julia Price said the camps, aided by Brisbane Lions coaches, continued the sportâÂÂs inroads into the state.
âÂÂItâÂÂs a sport thatâÂÂs on the move at the moment,âÂÂâ said Price, whose squad has competed against male teams.
âÂÂItâÂÂs becoming popular because of specialised training. They get one-on-one training.
âÂÂA lot of girls donâÂÂt start playing until high school but this is changing that.âÂÂâÂÂ
Price reserved praise for the two Logan locals, fruits of the codeâÂÂs labour in a rugby league-dominated region.
âÂÂWe have found that the Southern Redbacks club down there (in Jimboomba) has been great for providing talent,âÂÂâ she said.
âÂÂNat and Teneal have both played in the state under-18 team and are obviously both very talented.âÂÂâÂÂ
Both girls played club for Calamvale and were last month awarded their representative jerseys alongside the rest of the squad.
