In the first game of the double header at NO. 1 Oval in Tamworth the Kangaroos faced a Nomads side fighting for pride. And the pride factor worked for the Nomads in the first quarter as they stunned the Kangaroos with a six goal to three goals term. This gave the Nomads a 21 point lead at quarter time and an upset was on the cards. After what I would guess would have been a first quarter break dressing down by Coach Tony Bishop the Kangaroos started their fight back in the second quarter. The Kangaroos outscored the Nomads in the second quarter but it was still the Nomads who held the lead at half time by 8 points. With the Nomads trying to hold onto their lead the third quarter was a dour struggle with the Kangaroos kicking two more goals than the Nomads to finally take a 4 point lead into the last break. Going into the last quarter the Kangaroos were no certainties to win but in the end the Nomads just couldn't go with them and the Rooboys got home by 25 points. This game is just what the Kangaroos would have needed in preparation for their showdown with the Swans next week. The Nomads now face the Bulldogs at the kennel next week and they haven't been able to beat them this year. The Kangaroos named Luke Robinson as their best player and he had great support from Dan Overeem with 5 goals. For the Nomads they named Hamish Pearce as their best player and Sam Trotman and Caleb Dobos both kicked 4 goals each.
The Bulldogs could only round up 18 players to take on the Saints at Varley Oval in Inverell. But those 18 Bulldogs showed that they were committed at every contest. The Bulldogs scored the opening goal of the first quarter, showing their commitment before the Saints scored their first. The Bulldogs hit back with the next goal before the Saints scored a double. It was the Bulldogs who scored the next goal and then a behind to give them the lead before a late goal to the Saints saw them led the Bulldogs by 5 points at quarter time. The second quarter started with a treble of goals to the Saints, who were just starting to show their dominance. There were a number of behinds scored before the Bulldogs got their first goal of the quarter. The Saints closed the first half with a goal taking a 24 point lead into the main break. The third quarter had the saints kicking three goals at the start of the quarter before the Bulldogs got their only goal. The Saints kicked another two goals for the quarter but their radar was a bit off track as they also kicked six behinds and their three quarter time lead could have been more than their 53 points had they been able to straighten up. The last quarter was started like the previous two with Saints scoring multiple goals before the Bulldogs got their only goal of the quarter. The Saints kicked another three goals for the quarter to run out winners by 75 points. The Bulldogs lack of players was their biggest problem in this game, but the players that did make the trip impressed with their style of play and their fitness. The Saints were short a few of their main players and will only get better as they go into the finals. The Saints named Beau Ryan as their best player and he also kicked five goals and was supported by Jason Gobbert with four goals. The Bulldogs named Josh Hack as their best player and their leading goal kickers were Scott Hardy and Sam Naismith with 2 each.
In the second game of the double header at NO. 1 Oval in Tamworth the Swans took on the Cats. Like last week the Swans jumped right out of the blocks booting nine goals in the first quarter and keeping the Cats to one goal. This gave the Swans a quarter time lead of 51 points. The Swans continued on in the second quarter but needed to kick straighter because along with their eight goals they kicked seven behinds. All this while keeping the Cats to one behind giving them a 105 point lead at half time. The third quarter was the Swans lowest scoring quarter but they still managed seven goals to the Cats one goal giving them a final change break lead of 142 points. The last quarter saw the Swans kick another bag of eight goals to the Cats one goal to run out eventual winners by 190 points. This huge win has elevated the Swans back to the top of the Country Energy Tamworth AFL. The Swans best player was Jason Darcy and he also kicked 10 goals. Darcy had assistance up forward with Dean Hoy kicking 7 goals and Gavin Knee kicking 5 goals. For the Cats Brian Scott was named their best player and along with Stuart McAdam and Grant Ellis all kicked a goal apiece. The down side in this game for the Swans is Dean Hoy was reported and we will wait to see if accepts the prescribed penalty on offer.
