Nicky Logan completed the referee course with his dad and there has been some rivalry between them to see who is going to become the better referee. Sam has had an interest in basketball for a number of years and has turned his passion into refereeing. Usually representative players enter the referees program, but same has shown that you don’t have to be a rep player in order to have a great understanding of basketball and a desire to give back to the game. Sam recently referred his first representative game and should be congratulated on the fine job that he did.

Our thanks to Russell Potter and Maitland basketball for their dedication and support to NAHYDT in the 2009 Referee Program. We have a busy year ahead.

20 young people attended a Level 0 referee’s course at Maitland on Saturday to obtain their level 0 referee badge. All referees were given a whistle courtesy of the NAHYDT. There was a strong focus on fouls and also on court positioning, with all being able to experience what it is like to be a referee. All of the new rules were also integrated into the course, with participants actively working in groups to educate each other. All attendees passed and will be commencing their development this week.

The NSW Junior Basketball state championships got underway on the weekend the young referees were well supported at the Niagara park venue where the under 12’s and 14’s had a central venue for round 1. Jenny Shepherd (the league referees coordinator) and Sue Martens were actively involved all day coaching the referees throughout their games. It was pleasing to see the efforts being made by the new breed of referees as they adapted to some of the new rules Well done and a huge thanks to Jenny and Sue. Craig has been playing basketball for a few years and has a good understanding of the game. His confidence is showing through in his refereeing recently refereeing at the Maitland Club challenge and Newcastle CCC carnival. Well done Craig.

Brodie Musgrove is Cessnocks Referee of the month for February. Brodie is a dedicated and hard working young man who is always willing to do his share when needed. Although a relatively new starter in refereeing he has been improving his skills over the past few months and Cessnock Basketball Association wish him good luck in his refereeing career. Brodie will receive a starters pack sponsored by Donaldson Coal.

By all reports a big day out at Maitland Basketball Association at the Referee Workshop held 31st January. Forty Referees from the CJL assisted by Debbie and Bruce Keirs, Russell Potter, Sue Martens, Jenny Shepherd, Mark Harris and Joe Kelly were bought up to date on the latest referee rules.
