Brothers Roos reigned supreme in the battle for the A Grade Flag. In the Trend Interiors Carpet Court Premiership the Roos downed Glenmore Bulls 12.16.88 to 7.9.51 in front of an estimated 2000 strong crowd at Stenlake Park on Saturday.
The Bulls were expecting a strong start from the Roos which has been their trademark in recent weeks. Even with this expectation there was little they could do to prevent the onslaught. Brothers opened the scoring with a goals to J-P Culgan and Greg Lavey followed by an after goal incident which gave Hayden Bennett a goal before the bounce. The Bulls had no answers while the Roos piled on 6 goals 7 to their lone 1 behind for the term. This lead was to be the unattainable break that the Bulls could not pull back.
The second and third terms were much closer battles with Glenmore digging deep to drag back the lead. League runner up Best & Fairest James Miller tried to lead his team from the front while on baller Aaron Russell was at the fall of the ball on more occasions than not. Brothers were able to match this desperation with hard running at the ball and ferocious tackling. When in possession the well drilled Brothers outfit, through Brett Fagiacomo and Roy West, switched the play from deep in the back line to set up attacking raids on goal. Desperation from the Bulls defenders was able to hold opposition to 2 goals for the term while they kicked 2.3 themselves.
The pattern in the third term remained the same. Brothers on ball and center players lead by coach Steve Smithwick, his brother Scott and Brendan Ridgley continued the hard running football. This quarter was to be Glenmore's best chance to peg back the lead. Frustration at times got the better of some players with minor scuffles keeping the umpires on their toes. Brothers again won the quarter and if not for some inaccurate kicking in the tricky wind conditions could have had the match sealed if it was not already. Scores at the three quarter break had the Roos maintaining the lead 9.13.67 to 3.8.26.
Glenmore started the last quarter needing seven goals and with nothing to loose. James Miller and Andrew Abraham on the end of possession from the center battles. They were able to kick the first 3 goals for the term to create some urgency in the Brothers camp. Brothers stepped up by virtue of their relentless tackling and wide running play to find Steve Smithwick loose deep in the forward line to slot a goal and sink the chances of the Bulls. Brothers from there controlled the game to kick a further 2 goals for the term running out winners by 37 points.
