Over 50 Men's Final
Counties Manukau vs Canterbury
Counties had been unstoppable in the opening rounds and started strongly in the one match that mattered. They started brightly with Joey Broughton grabbing a nice basketball-style pass from the winger but not managing to put it down before the touch.
Canterbury made the most of their opening defensive effort and made no mistakes when they found themselves in Counties territory on their first set. Steve Campbell found his way through in the middle and gave the underdogs the perfect start.
The South Islanders extended the lead after seven minutes when Doug Allcock took a short pass and went over untouched.
Allcock was over again not long after, to really put the pressure on Counties. With the sun beating down a 3-0 lead was worth a lot more. Counties were a constant threat on Canterbury's line but they couldn't quite find the right combination, and pressure continued to mount.
An inside ball to Whitu Karauna saw the lead balloon to 4-0 and what looked like an insurmountable halftime lead.
Counties came to play in the second half and the teams traded touchdown for touchdown with some tired defence opening up the game. The three Touchdowns that Counties managed were matched and then some by Canterbury, who eventually ran out 8-3 winners.
