In a much anticipated project, earth has finally been turned on oval 2 with the Army getting underway with digging trenches for the installation of new irrigation.
After coming under scrutiny with the ground unplayable a couple of years ago due the hardness of the surface, discussions commenced between the Mayne Tigers, the Everton Wolves and AFL Queensland about what might be possible to improve the ground.
Due to a strong relationship with the Army, AFL Queensland set about putting together a potential project to install this much needed infrastructure at the Den with their invaluable assistance.
The Brisbane City Council have also provided their support to the project as the owner of the facility which has been very valuable as always.
AFL Queensland have some unique skills with their team led by Chris Dalton to oversee a project utilising the expertise and machinery at the disposal of the local Army Base at Enoggera.
Works got underway last week with AFL Queensland and their contractors setting out the design for the new irrigation infrastructure and with the Army getting into the hard work yesterday locating the incoming main with a view to connecting a new line to the existing 50,000 litre tank.
The tank when full will provide a significant head of water to provide increased water pressure to make the new sprinklers as effective as possible.
The project is expected to take about three weeks with the final result setting the Tigers and the Wolves up for a nice green oval 2 for the 2020 pre-season.
This will mean both clubs will be able to spread themselves out more effectively on training nights with the grounds expected to be in use most week nights to cater for the ever increasing load with more teams coming on line each year.
While the additional water usage will of course be an issue which will need to be closely monitored and budgeted by both clubs, this is an exciting development.
AFL Queensland have also been engaged to undertake a review and renovation of the current irrigation system on oval 1 which will also ensure the ovals are in playable condition for Season 2020.
Both the Tigers and the Wolves extend their thanks to AFL Queensland, the Army and Brisbane City Council for their tremendous support with this project.
