2020 Darwin FA Season Cancelled

Afternoon to all

Today after many calls and discussions with the clubs within our Association it has been agreed unanimously that we call a halt to the 2020 season.

There have been many issues facing clubs including the criteria presented as to training until the (hopeful) start and the pressure on each club to adhere to the rules.

Also, the expenses that would be ongoing including lights, etc with no prospect of any remuneration from the normal areas such as canteen, bar and gate takings with no crowds. This would also see a finals series run with no crowds which would certainly mean a serious loss to the Association.

I must however make mention of the tremendous work and input from AFL Tasmania people in Trisha Squires and Damian Gill and as of today an offer from Trisha to work with us in any way possible for the 2021 season.

In thanking them I must also thank all the Presidents who have been most open in their talks with myself and other club Presidents about the situation we have been placed in.

In closing may I make all aware that the Presidents want us to sit at the earliest opportunity to discuss the revival of the Darwin in 2021 and to investigate different ways we can promote our game and any changes we may need to make going forward.

I believe we may have become a little stagnant over the last few years and this may give us the opportunity to revitalise the interest once again.

I know this may be hard on some but we must also think of our elderly in each club, who on many occasions are the hard working volunteers each week and are the most at risk in these times.

Please stay safe and I will be only too happy to keep you informed of any news within the Association in the next months ahead.

Kind Regards

Barry Dunham
President, DFA
