Team of the Week - U13's

The Mighty Kenmore Bear under 13s came up against a committed Sandgate Hawks side Sunday morning in what was a must win game for the Bears if they were to keep their finals hopes alive. The Bears were showing all the negative effects of some quality time off over the school holidays in the first half. Sandgate had turned up ready to play and were harder at the ball in the first half and deserved to go into the main break with a slender lead. The lead would have been greater if not for the efforts of Kenmore Bear Dylan Ebertson who was superb in defence continually winning the ball and turning defence into attack.

Pleasingly, the boys responded well in the third quarter with much better attack on the footy and a stronger tackling effort with Ollie Fortescue leading the way in the midfield. To their credit, Sandgate met our increased intensity and the game became a real arm wrestle with the sides still separated by less than a kick at three quarter time. A special effort was asked from the whole team at three quarter time and the response was emphatic. Some dominance in the centre square was efficiently converted into goals by a potent looking forward line lead by Aidan Goddard, Myles Brown, Aidan Lloyd and Jai Dekker. The 5 goal to nil last quarter delivering a comfortable win - in the end - 10.7.67 to 5.3.33.

With 5 rounds to go we sit one game outside the top 5 with 5 wins and 6 losses. So where to from here? Well that’s up to our group of fine young men. They’ve been on a steep learning curve making the jump from junior footy to youth footy. But they’ve made enormous progress in terms of taking responsibility for their game day and training performances. I can’t predict what’s in store over the next 5 weeks. What I can guarantee though is this. If our boys are prepared to train hard and bring their best competitive effort to each of the remaining games then we will give ourselves every chance to play some finals footy at the business end of the season. From there anything is possible….or in the words of the late great Muhammad Ali

“If my mind can conceive it, and my heart can believe it, then I can achieve it"
