Metro Mens

Our Team in Focus story this week takes us to the Senior side of the club for the first time. We spoke to Kevin, coach of the Metro Sunday team about how their season was going.

Right off the bat, Kevin is quick to praise his squad for what’s been a tremendous start to the season, “It would be fair to say that the season so far has exceeded my expectations. A Men’s Metro Sunday Team has not been fielded by BZ for several years now and the squad only came together for the first time in the middle of March.” What makes this all the more remarkable is the fact that the Metro’s are sitting equal with first on points.

One thing in particular that has pleased Kevin is the fact that so many players have stepped up this season, the team averages more than two goals a game, but it’s telling that their highest goal scorer only has three goals to his name. Everyone in the team has been combining to great affect and Kevin believes this is the reason they’ve had such a good start to their season. Kevin did want to give a special mention to Nick and Indi for their contribution to pre-game “sounds” in the dressing room.

On the subject of noise, Kevin asked me to give a shout out to the cheer squad of Conna, Dixie, Nick, Enso, and Marc, who have all been to most of the team’s games, and even taught the boys the words to the BZ Victory Song, just as well they did, I’m sure that’s come in handy a few times this season!

Back to the pitch though and there’s been improvement all over the squad, and nowhere is that more evident than in the play of Franco who’s played almost no football in his life, preferring the pace of Futsal, but he’s come to the outdoor game this season and has improved out of sight, one of just many such stories in this team’s season so far.

A good start to the season means expectations are high from Kevin, who wants his boys to remain competitive for the rest of the year, knowing that they can be there or thereabouts come the end of the season. Coming off a win last weekend, the Metros will look to keep their momentum going. That result on the weekend capped off an incredible round of football for our senior Men sides, a hat trick of wins for the Seniors, and resident historian Marc Roca believes that this is the first time in club history that we’ve managed to do that.

We’d like to wish the Metro Mens the best of luck for the season.
