Sandgate Masters vs Hervey Bay Round 7 2013
The Sandgate Masters had their yearly trip to Hervey bay last weekend to play the Fruit bats. As past players can confirm it is a much anticipated trip and always a hard game against a determined home side.
Sandgate fielded a solid 23 man side that included 8 from our over 45 side. We planned to go hard from the start and catch the fruit bats off guard, and that’s what we did. The first quarter saw four goals kicked to one with a good breeze behind us. Our backline were performing well with good efforts from Sock, Jammo and Carts. Unfortunately the Hervey bay side came back in the 2nd quarter and at half time we were level.
The wind had died in the second half, but our forward line failed to kick ahead with some normally converted goals being missed. We went to the last break just ahead. The last quarter was a fiercely fought contest, with all players giving 100% to hang onto a slender lead for the last 5 minutes. The siren took a long time to blow, but when it did, Sandgate had won by 2 points.
Many beers have been consumed since the last siren, but I believe our goal kickers were Phil, Bails, Cam, Middy, Shirls, and Charlie kicked his first of the season. If I have forgotten anyone, sorry about that.It was a great team defensive effort by everyone, and we all enjoyed doing the Sandgate song on the field, in front of their home crowd.
An enjoyable meal and many drinks were consumed back at the Kondari resort. Special thanks to our President who drove the bus there and back and only consumed 3 rum and cokes the whole trip- some of us had consumed that by Burpengary!! As I said previously, it is a great trip to be enjoyed by all, and anyone who missed it this year, make sure you do it next season.
Final score Sandgate 10-13-73 Hervey Bay 10-11-71
Cup winner- Shirley
