SANDGATE MASTERS V HERVEY BAY 7 JULY 2012
Sandgate Masters had their yearly bus trip up to Hervey bay last weekend to play the Hervey bay fruit bats- since when were they bombers? All players showed up at our grounds, bags were stored, eskies were filled and off we went.
Willow volunteered to drive the bus for the trip, as he was only one of two that had the correct licence- Phils turn next year. There was a strict understanding that no one was to consume more than a dozen cans on the trip; otherwise they were to play in the backline. Steiny had organised some horse racing entertainment on the way, with Sticks cleaning up on the punting contest winning just short of a million dollars.(Thanks for putting the $200 won on the bar later that evening- much appreciated).
After booking into our resort and a few more beers, it was time to get to the ground and concentrate on a footy game. The conditions were unexpected for the game- only a mild temperature, no rain, and a couple of reserves on the bench.
Sandgate took control from the first bounce and continually moved the ball wide to wings that resulted in goals to Middy (2), Cam and Nails. Phil kicked his first goal of the season (still hearing about it) and Darren kicked a long range beauty. Sticks was doing well in the ruck and our on ballers of Joey, Joffa, Butch and Mark Sinclair were continually moving the ball forward. The defence of Sandgate was impregnable with great games being had by Dawsey, Todd, Des, Andy and Banksy. Paul Timms had a blinder of a game, was everywhere on the field, and ended up bagging 3 goals. It was our first real committed team effort against a hard fit team, and the results of some good training sessions really showed.
The usual hospitable Hervey bay side put on some beers, snacks, and the raffle wheel after the game. More beers followed back at the accommodation, with a good meal, some average pool playing, and of course Banksys fire flame through the darkness. I don’t know how Sticks elephant hat remained untorched throughout the night and after some sober human flicking by Timmsy- it was time to hit the sack- at 5.00am.
An enjoyable day was followed with many beers consumed on the trip home by some, and plenty of singing. It is a great weekend away, so any players who have not participated in it before- book your seat for next year.
Final score Sandgate 9-13-67 Hervey Bay 3-7-25.
