SANDGATE MASTERS V REDCLIFFE 1 APRIL 2012
Sandgate Masters had their first game of the season last weekend against Redcliffe Tigers. Two of Sandgates old boys Beefy and GD had joined Redcliffe, so we were keen to give them a hard contest at their new home ground.
Sandgate came out well with goals to Steiny and Middy from the forward line and behinds from Kev and Bails. Redcliffe were dominant in the middle with GD running amuck and consistently shutting down any attack we produced. Their tall centre half forward was a handful but was well contained by Timmsy and their contests were dominant throughout the remainder of the match.
Sandgate went into the second half a few points behind, but with a great running goal straight from the bounce from Fergy, all looked good for a resurgence. Though we missed a few shots at goal in the last quarter, so did Redcliffe. Willow was doing well at fullback and continually ran the ball from the square to deliver far up field. Old Beefy managed to grab a few goals against us, and still has good skills for an old man. Other goals from Cam and Middy kept the contest close, but with poor kicking and options, we continually turned the ball over. Several players were having the first game for the club including Cam, Neil, Fergy, GD, Jags, Marty and Jamo- all had great games, and will be an asset to the club.
The final siren saw Redcliffe take the game by 8 points. We were all disappointed to let that game slip through our fingers, as we knew it was ours for the taking. Unfortunately we don’t play them again- but I’m sure the result would be reversed at a future round. Something to build on though.
Final score Sandgate 7-7-49 Redcliffe 8-9-57.
Winner of cup- Marty
