2017 Club Championships

After winning the Division 1 under 18 grand final at GBNC the good fortunes for our South Geelong Kings Basketball Club continued this weekend 7th-8th October 2017 with a win at the under 18 division of the Basketball Victoria Country Club Championships held in Ballarat.

To reach the title game our team had to complete 6 games over two days, with a first up loss to Celtic Tigers 53-51 the boys rallied to win their next 5 games in a row. The scond pool game was a win over Accheringa of Mildura 56-39, then the Kings defeated Geelong rival Pivot City 39-34 to end day one with a two win and one loss record.

Day two saw our Kings boys play Aztec Tigers of Bendigo who we narrowly defeated 49-48 giving our boys a chance at the semi final game. In the semi final we played Pheonix of Ballarat and the boys again got up 46-38 to make the grand final where they would again meet the Celtic Tigers who just defeated Geelong's Try Boys.

The grand final was tight early with a 21-21 score at the half as both teams were feeling each other out and a little nervous, but in the second half the Kings stormed home and ran hard tiring out the Tigers to take the title by 18 points 56-38 and becoming the 2017 BVC club champions.

Another back story to this game was that the coach Mitchell Pendergast was a team member of the Kings under 14 boys who ten years earlier had won the club champs title and his brother Riley was in this team making it a family milestone for both in the 40th and 50th year anniversary for Basketball Victoria Country.

The club also sent our under 16 boys to this tournament, they played four games with their first game Kings v Surfcoasters for a win 46-38 on Saturday before they then played two more games, a loss to the Aztec Tigers 42-57 then a win against Exies Acmy White 50-37.

On the Sunday the 16 boys came up against Aztec Tigers Gold and after building up a lead the boys were overtaken to end up going down in a close one 50-51. The team did very well and had a huge weekend, they will be much better for this experience and the club is very proud of the way everyone performed and behaved in Ballarat over the weekend.
