A mixed effort at the Gordon Recreation Reserve on Saturday saw Beaufort leave with a 4 goal win. The Eagles produced uninspiring football in the 1st and 3rd quarters in stark contrast to the 2nd and 4th quarters when they played some of their best football of the year. Had it not been for the loss of 6 key players before the bounce the boys may have been a lot closer to their first win for the season. On the other hand, first-gamers Brendan Dunn and Matt McGarry impressed and will put pressure on as places in the team become contested. Brendan Tudor continued his good form in a defensive role and was joined by his brother Stephen in the best players. Brad Hallam and Matthew Sweet showed speed up forward while Nathan Rogers and Adam Turley were Gordon's major ball winners all day. If the team string together four quarters of solid football then a win is right around the corner.
In the "Midday Show", the Gordon boys got off to a good start and were taking it up to the opposition in the 1st quarter. The 2nd quarter saw Beaufort kick 7 goals to Gordon's 1 goal. For the 3rd quarter the Eagles held Beaufort goal-less but only managed a single goal themselves . The Crows were able to steady in the last quarter and come away with a big win. Tim "Growler" Nicholson was a standout for best on ground with Stu Miller, Toby Spratling, Ryan Callaghan, Dave Kersley and Josh "Rangaford" Hanaford also having solid games.
The under 18s had another tough day at the office being overshadowed by a stronger team. Donovan Jones snagged a couple of goals while Kurt Hector and Gerard Clifford (also vice-captain of the under 15s) headed up the best pleayers. It was good to see a few of the younger guys getting a bit more involved in the team's effort though.
Unfortunately, the under 15s were note able get home against Beaufort either, going down by only 9 points. Jesse Pritchard booted 3 goals and Gerard Clifford was best on ground. Hopefully the boys can take their efforts into next round and get over the line.
All the teams need take lessons from the weekend's losses and use them to go forward during the season.
Next round Gordon tackle Buninyong, at the Buninyong Football Ground, who are sitting at the top of the ladder in the seniors. This will be a real challenege which hopefully the players can rise to and really push the opposition.
