We were away quickly from the blocks with early goals to Craig Keenan and Rob Johnston setting up a six goal opening stanza. We were moving the ball well and giving our forwards every chance. We were pegged back a little in the second term, but still went to main break with a handy lead in a low scoring affair.
In a carbon copy of the earlier meeting against Highett, our third quarter was horrid. We were second to the ball, unaccountable and kicked to horrible options when going forward. We created 6 scoring shots but they resulted in points. Highett were more efficient with their ball use, setting up three unanswered goals and reducing the margin to 9 points at the last break.
With so much at stake for both clubs it was disappointing that we were not able to impose our will in the last quarter. We made some poor decisions under pressure and at times were out willed by a determined opposition. Some accurate kicking by the bad guys didn’t help our cause. A dreadful decision in the dying stages of a tight match was compounded by our lack of discipline which converted it into a certain goal.
Four quarter contributors were harder to find than a gypsy with a mortgage. Danny Wilson in the ruck bucked the trend along with Luke Woolrich in defence. Craig Keenan battled hard all day along with Gav Vassallo, Justin Doust and Jackson Bolch.
The reserves was a sad affair as we kept a badly undermanned opponent scoreless. Luke Carter kicked 6, Paul Riley 4, Matt Pay and Chris Chalmers 3 each. Benny Williams, Jason Adams, Brad Wilson and Matt Devereaux were among the best. Thanks to the Highett lads who took to the field to help out their club and provide a game.
