The Khe Sanh cup was up for grabs at Souter Reserve on Saturday. With big Drew Little back in after a lengthy absence and Steve Sheen on debut for the demons, suddenly there was some height in the red white and blue. With Jack Sketcher also released from his duties with Sandringham dragons, we were more than hopeful things would go our way.
Drew was on top early in the ruck and we were able to capitalise with early goals to DT and Swanny. Straight kicking served the home side well as we went into the first break 3 points adrift after they put on five straight. It would be the demons who had the better of the second term with Jay Piggin working his way into the game Anthony Bernardo outstanding on the ball. The third quarter remained a tense battle as we increased our lead slightly,
With the oranges digesting the game was up for grabs and our endeavour was superb. A long goal from the inspirational coach extended our lead to 23 points and it seemed a sure thing that the Khe Sanh Cup would find a new home. The Dingoes would not be denied and piled on three quick majors to get back to within a kick before Steve Sheen marked strongly and converted from 40m. In the end we held firm for a 6 point win. Whilst the home side got close, in truth it would have been a travesty had we lost, as we led for the vast majority of the day.
As mentioned Anthony Bernardo was superb for the day, whilst the coach’s game at centre half forward show cased the class act he is. His contests created opportunities for those around whilst four goals from his own boot capped a fine day’s work. Interleague aspirants Jay Piggin and Brendan Ashman did their selection chances no harm with some quality performances. Jack Sketcher showed his class along with veteran Brad Scott. The song was sung with gusto for not the last time in 2010.
The reserves were not a successful, falling to a better Dingley outfit. It has not been an easy season for the reserves and credit must go to Paddy Hill for the way he has conducted himself all season.
