Communication Update – October 21st, 2020

Hi Vultures,

The wait continues…..!

Unfortunately, Sunday’s announcement did not allow for a return to indoor basketball. Please click here to download a letter from Mark Hallett, CEO of Nunawading Basketball, regarding their position on Return to Sport.

Thank you for your patience as we re-plan. We’ll keep you updated as more information arises.

Communication Update – October 7th, 2020

Hi Vultures,

We hope this update finds you well. It’s been a long wait but we have our fingers crossed that basketball can resume in some form in 2020!

Our committee is working tirelessly in the background so we’re ready to push ahead when the restrictions are lifted, and we are allowed to hit the courts once again.

In the meantime, here are some reminders & updates on a few things:

Check your uniforms!

Has anyone had a winter growth spurt? A reminder to try on your uniforms, and visit the club shop if you need to buy anything new! Orders need to be in by the 15th of the month for a 3-4 week delivery window.

For all enquiries regarding uniforms, please email: uniforms@vermontvultures.org.au

Registration of managers / coaches

Coaches and Team Managers are required to register for these positions – if you are interested in completing one of these roles in the next season, please do so here. Thank you to those who have already registered!

Team Announcements

Being optimistic of a 2020/21 Summer Season, our Team Selectors are currently working on team lists, and once we have a confirmed season start, we’ll distribute these to Coaches and Managers.

New Competition Days

MEBA has recently announced updated midweek competition days for the Summer season. All Girls competitions will now be played on Mondays (as well as U8 Mixed) and all Boy's competitions will be played on Fridays. If this means that you are now unable to play in the midweek competition, please contact us at clubadmin@vermontvultures.org.au to move to a Saturday competition or to request a refund."

Return to Play Survey

In readiness for a potential easing of restrictions, Nunawading Basketball is calling for feedback on possible options for a return to play. We would appreciate as many Vultures families completing this survey to share their opinions and help shape next season.

MEBA Participant Survey

Thank you for your patience as we re-plan. We’ll keep you updated as more information arises.

Hi Vultures, here’s a great opportunity for anyone thinking of joining the Spectres (the representative program our Club is affiliated with).

With the end of 2020 fast approaching, Nunawading Basketball is launching ‘Future Spectres’, a free 6-week online skills training program for domestic only players, born in 2010 or later who may be considering representative basketball in 2021.

There has not been a lot of basketball played this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and with a potential easing of restrictions on the horizon this program is a great way to get a ball back in the hands of our younger ballers in preparation for a return to the court!

Under the guidance of Spectres Under 12 Head Coaches Peter Rooke (Girls) and Steve Kennedy (Boys), the 2021 Spectres team coaches will provide expert teaching and coaching via dedicated Zoom video training sessions each week

No basketball ring? No problem! This program just focuses on teaching the correct fundamental skills that underpins success on the court. All your child needs access to in order to participate is:

  • A basketball (size 6 is preferred)
  • Enough space with a flat, hard surface in which a basketball can be bounced safely
  • A laptop or mobile device with video and internet capability

The program will tip-off at 11:00am on Sunday, 4 October 2020 and run every week for 6 weeks. Make sure you register to secure a place for your child and receive a Zoom video link via email along with further instructions.

The Nunawading Spectres are one of Australia’s most successful basketball programs, and we look forward to welcoming your child as we look to help them unlock their potential.

Communication Update – July 26, 2020

Hi Vultures,

Just a quick update for all those who have signed up for the Summer season. As previously communicated, the extended season, intended to kick off 8 August, has been impacted by the latest round of COVID related restrictions in Melbourne. We have been advised that planning is underway for the season to now start on Monday 5 October, which is the first week of Term 4 and in line with a regular Summer season.

Obviously, things are pretty fluid at the moment, so this date may shift if we have an extended lockdown period. We'll update everyone if we hear this is going to change.

We can also let you know that as this is now back to a regular Summer season and not an extended one, the decision was also made by MEBA to revert to the normal age groups and not hold over the Winter groupings. As a result, we will now begin work again on forming teams and our intent is to distribute these once we have a confirmed start.

So please stay safe, follow the rules, and hopefully we'll see you all courtside soon.

Thanks,

Vultures Committee

Communication Update – July 5, 2020

Hi Vultures,

Based on some queries & social media commentary regarding changes to the fee structure this season, we wanted to make sure everyone is clear on what has changed and what the impacts are.

Summary

MEBA have made a number of decisions that impact costs for this season including increasing the cost for weekly team sheets and adding the venue entry fee to this to facilitate a cashless experience. Full details of changes for the season are listed below.

We have reviewed the new cost structure against a number of variables including the profile of players per family at our club, the number of players in a team, and the number of parents attending games. Whilst this is assumption based, and we recognise that there are lots of variables that influence each family's circumstances, we have been able to identify that the majority of the club will likely either pay the same, or are a little better off than last season.

We understand that there are some scenarios where a small number of families will be paying more, and for anyone who cannot absorb this, we are able to review individual circumstances. If you think this is your situation, then please email the Club President Hamish Blank, in confidence, at president@vermontvultures.org.au. We have added more detail below to help you understand the impact to your family’s position. Hopefully this helps.

We have also made the decision to not include the full cost of registration & team sheet fees as a single payment in order to spread out costs throughout the season. This means we will use the Teammo app to facilitate weekly team sheet payments. We'll shortly circulate details on this to Managers for this season however for a brief overview, please take a look at a demonstration at
https://www.teammo.com.au/nunawading.

As a club, we obviously seek to represent your interests in keeping costs as low as possible, however we also recognise this is a unique situation for MEBA to manage this year. We have decided to absorb the additional 7-8 weeks of training costs from running an extended season, and for future seasons, we will look to further review options for those families with 3 or more children playing.

Regards,

Vultures Committee

Summer season changes & cost impact assessment

What has changed?

  • This season there will be 25 games, not including finals (up from a typical 16-17 game summer season)
  • MEBA have increased team sheet costs from $38.50 to $41 per game
  • MEBA has made the decision that venues will go cashless and therefore the $3 entry fee per player/spectator, per day, will now be added to the team sheet cost
  • MEBA have calculated that on average 14.3 players/spectators have attended each game in recent seasons, which means the entry fee component to be added is $43 per game
  • The total cost per game is therefore now $84
  • The $84 weekly payment will now be completed electronically via Teammo app each week

What have we done?

We have estimated the cost change against:
  • Number of parents attending each day (1 or 2)
  • Number of players in the team (7 or 8)
  • Number of children in each family (1-3)

We've completed a table to highlight impact of the main scenarios - the change per week from last season is highlighted, with the colour coding to represent scale of impact (note negative impacts i.e. where families are better off, are represented with brackets)

Change per week with 7 players on a team

  Parents Attending
Children Playing 1 2
1 $0.50 ($2.50)
2 $4.00 $1.00
3 $7.50 $4.50

Change per week with 8 players on a team

  Parents Attending
Children Playing 1 2
1 ($0.30) ($3.30)
2 $2.40 ($0.60)
3 $5.00 $2.00

We identified that the majority of families in the club have just one child playing and therefore have a minimal impact or are better off

This table does not cover every scenario, but we think it covers the majority of the club. Obviously if there are more parents/direct family members attending, this will decrease the cost but the reverse is true for some of the older age groups who may have no family members or parents attend

What does this mean for me?

For the large majority of the club, you are either paying less or about the same as previous seasons

Your team manager will still collect team sheet payments as per previous seasons, however this will now include the entry fee component

Keep in mind that the increase team sheet cost for the season is also as a result of a 50% increase in the number of games to be played

Communication Update – July 2, 2020

Hi Vultures,

We hope you are all looking forward to the resumption of basketball. As we’re sure you can appreciate, there is a lot to do behind the scenes to ensure a safe and coordinated return to sport. Things seem to be changing daily, with revised restrictions etc, so who knows what will happen in the next 6 weeks! We will push on until we hear otherwise.

In the meantime, here is some more information for you regarding registration, coach/team managers call out, COVID safety, game-day procedures and other housekeeping!

1. Reminder on registration for Summer 2020/21

As outlined in our previous communication, here are the options for the registration for the coming season:

• If you were not registered for the Winter season, but wish to play the Summer season, registration is now open here until 10 July

• If you were registered for the Winter season, but will not play the Summer season, please let us know asap via email to clubadmin@vermontvultures.org.au and we will provide details for how you can claim a refund

• If you were registered for the Winter season, and wish to play the Summer season, there is nothing for you to do! Your registration is carried over and you are paid up, however you should try on your uniform, and visit the club shop if you need to buy anything new if you’ve had a winter growth spurt.

2. Call for managers / coaches and register

The club relies on volunteers and we appreciate everyone who puts their hand up to assist us with coaching and team management. With restrictions likely to include only one parent/guardian being able to attend junior games (in addition to coach & manager), it’s a perfect time to volunteer!   If you would like to register your interest in these positions, please do so here. Thank you to those who have already registered. Role specific communications will be forthcoming.

We have a dedicated coaches Facebook page (search “Vermont Vultures Coaches”), we’d love you to join and ask any questions you may have. Alternatively, please contact Matt or Brendan at coachingcoordinator@vermontvultures.org.au and they’ll be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Details will also be sent through shortly for some upcoming Club-subsidised Coaches courses on July 15th and 23rd. These Community coaching sessions run by Basketball Victoria are a great way to develop beginner level training skills.

3. COVID- related safety info and online training

We will likely require all team managers and coaches to complete the COVID-19 Infection Control Training provided by the Health Department to assist with compliance at team trainings etc. Parents who are substituting will also need to have done the training. The more club members who undertake the training, the safer we can be!

https://www.health.gov.au/resources/apps-and-tools/COVID-19-infection-control-training

Nunawading Basketball Centre have released their ‘Return to Basketball Guidelines’. They have asked that all members familiarise themselves with the directions provided. You can download the document here.

In exciting news, our hard working committee has managed to secure a $1000 grant courtesy of Sport and Recreation Victoria, so we will be in a position to supply sanitiser & wipes to our teams.

Updates regarding the return to basketball and COVID-specific regulations are posted regularly at

www.basketballvictoria.com.au/covid-19/

4. Trophies

As COVID-restrictions are still limiting our ability to distribute last seasons’ trophies, please be assured we will get them to you as soon as we can.

5. Uniforms

Visit the club shop if you need to buy anything new if you’ve had a winter growth spurt! For all enquiries regarding uniforms and pickup please email: uniforms@vermontvultures.org.au

6. Training commences 3/8

Availability of stadiums is still being confirmed, with training tentatively set to commence on Monday August 3rd. Further details will follow as we hear more.

Thank you for your patience as we re-plan. We’ll keep you updated as more information arises.

Regards, Vultures Committee

June 25, 2020 Update

Communication Update – We’re Back!

Hi Vultures,

We are pretty excited to let you know that we have a confirmed return to basketball, albeit with plenty of changes. Given the amount of information we have to let you know, we'll update our comms several times over the next fortnight so as not to swamp you. Keep following us on Facebook, keep an eye on your inbox, or continue to visit this website to stay up to date.

We also encourage you to read through a communication from our local association MEBA, that provides more detail on the below (see link at bottom of update).

Here are the key points:

  • The Winter season has been cancelled, however an extended Summer season has been scheduled to commence 8 August, 2020, and will run until Friday 26 March, 2021 (last Grand Final day)

  • All Winter registrations will be rolled over to Summer and age groups will be ‘frozen’ as if it was still the Winter 2020 season

  • The mid-week competition has been consolidated; U8’s Mixed and Girl’s will now only play on Monday’s and the Boy's will now only play Friday’s

  • The competition venues will become ‘cashless’ and the per person entry fee will be incorporated into the weekly team sheet cost which will increase accordingly

What do I need to do now?

  • If you were not registered for the Winter season, but wish to play the Summer season, registration is now open here until 10 July

  • If you were registered for the Winter season, but will not play the Summer season, please let us know asap via email to clubadmin@vermontvultures.org.au and we’ll provide details for how you can claim a refund

  • If you were registered for the Winter season, and wish to play the Summer season, there is nothing for you to do! Your registration is carried over and you are paid up, however you should try on your uniform, and visit the club shop if you need to buy anything new if you’ve had a winter growth spurt.

We are conscious that the situation in Victoria is fluid at the moment in regards to COVID restrictions, so we will keep you updated as we hear more. More details on COVID protocols for training and games will be released shortly.

Can't wait to see you all soon!

Regards, Vultures Committee
