On March 13th 2012 Michael Roberts and Peter Dye from AFL Victoria Southern Peninsula Region attended South East AMES Education Centre to introduce Australian Football to the adult and youth students made up of both male and female.
AMES is a migrant education and settlement language school which caters for new migrant and CALD community members, as well refugees from various situations and countries. Many of the students live in Doveton, Dandenong and Noble Park.
20 students attended the presentation which involved an introduction to the game (points is a goal, push in the back, tackling too high, out of bounds on the full, etc), rules learning session, picking a team to support, differences to other sports and vision of the skills of the game.
No students have been to or watched an AFL match and certainly none have ever played the game before.
The second part of the session was outdoors and the students were taught how to kick (drop punt, torpedo, banana), mark (overhead mark, chest mark, hand mark), and handball. The students also got a chance to practice their goal kicking and thoroughly enjoyed the whole day.
AFL Victoria will continue their fantastic relationship with AMES in the future and will be heading there throughout the year for more sessions and to hopefully get them along to their first AFL match.
