Brett Miller has been a regular in Altona teams for many years now and he has no plans to retire. This week Brett plays his 450th career game. This is an amazing effort and one that we celebrate with him.
Brett started his football career in the U11 competition with Altona North Brooklyn Youth (ANBY) Club. Wearing the yellow and black (same as Richmond) he played there until U16s. The highlight of his time with ANBY was the U14 Grand Final against Flemington. While the team lost, Brett fondly remembers the game and the effort they put in. Shannon Grant played for Flemington, which may account for their win.
In his 2nd year in U16s Brett transferred to Newport, as his brother was there. The coach, Steven Martin, who knew Brett asked him to come to the Club. He only stayed one year with Newport before transferring to the mighty Vikings.
Brett started with Altona FC in 1995 with the U18s. Playing for two years, he also played a number of Reserves games in his second year. The team played in finals in both years, but unfortunately could not go all the way.
Once he graduated to the senior list, he experienced some lean years with the Club. While there were not a lot of highlights in these years, he did finish Runner Up Best and Fairest in his first year. The Seniors were a middle of the road team and had difficulty matching the stronger clubs.
It took Brett 8 years before he tasted ultimate success in the 2004 Div 2 Premiership side. Brett remembers the supporters fondly during the 2004 and 2005 premiership years. “The supporters were fantastic and really made playing for the Club fun. It was great to come off the ground and sing the song in those days.”
Brett remembers playing with Greg Cunningham and Andrew Venner as other highlights of his career and rates Andrew Venner as the best player he has played with. He rates the current Altona FC team as the best one he has seen at the Club.
Brett is currently playing in the undefeated Reserves team, where he is one of the senior players. He thinks he can keep playing for another couple of years and we all look forward to seeing more of him.
Congratulations to Brett Miller on 450 Career Games.
