Saints 14-9-93 def Nomads 9-5-59
In a game that they were expected to win by heaps, the Saints found it fairly hard going against the home team Nomads at Bellevue Oval yesterday. The Home side got away to a good start, kicking 4 goals to the Saints 2 to lead the visitors by 11 points at the first break. The good form continued into the 2nd quarter, with the Nomads adding 3-2-20 to their total to maintain a slender lead at the main break of 9 points over the league leaders. A calming talk by Saints coach Dick Gleeson at half time had the desired effect, with the visitors kicking 4-1-25 in the 3rd and keeping the Nomads to 0-1-1 to break the game open. A tired Nomads side kept trying in the final quarter but their 2 goals couldn't match the Saints 5 goals and the game blew out a little in the final stages, Saints winning by 34 points. BOG for the Saints was Sturart Walker, who also kikced 2 goals. Nate Munro slotted 3 and Mick Viney and Jason Gobbert also potted 2 apiece. For the Nomads, Hamish Roberston was BOG and Jay Dunlop booted 4 goals.
Bulldogs 15-16-106 def Eagles 10-10-70
Injuries and work committments prevented the Bulldogs from fielding their strongest side at home against the visiting Eagles, who were also quite undermanned, starting the game with only 15 players. The plucky Eagles were soon up to a full 16 and gave the Dogs a contest throughout all four quarters. The game opened with an Bulldogs goal to Steve Reid and the Dogs appeared in control during the first 10 minutes. Some gutsy play by the Eagles saw them finish the first quarter only trailing by a goal. Some poor kicking options and sloppy tackling by the Dogs saw them give away the ball and field position on numerous occasions and the Eagles strove to take advantage of this, posting several good goals. Rushed kicks in front of goal by the Dogs didn't help their overall cause. Some good patches of team play saw them lead at half time by 22 points, but at no point were the Eagles daunted or out of touch. Both sides traded goals in the remaining 2 quarters but the Dogs were able to maintain a steady points buffer to run out eventual winners by 36 points. BOG for the Bulldogs was Pete Chapman who was everywhere in defence and ran the ball hard all day. Mark Ewington had a good day with boot, kicking 8 majors and was ably supported by Farran lamb with 3 and Brendon Lemon with 2. For the Eagles Mark Stevens was BOG and led from the front all day. Dave Pate booted 3 goals and was supported by Duane Shawcross and Dave Lewis with 2 each. This game sees the Dogs breathing down the necks of the Tamworth Swans for 5th spot and a finals berth, with a lot resting upon the Dogs game against the Cats in Gunnedah next week and the Eagles playing the Swans out at Narrabri. If the Eagles can roll the Swans and the Dogs can do the same to the Cats, the Dogs will sneak past the Swans on Game % and most likely F/A %.
Cats 17-9-111 def Roos 14-12-96
This game was a crunch game for both teams, with the Roos coming of a confidence sapping thumping at the hands of the Saints a week ago and the Cats left frustrated by a Swans forfeit. The Cats are always hard to beat at home and have only gone down once there this year to the high flying Saints. The opening quarter was tight, with the home side maintaining a one goal advantage at the break to lead by 5 points. The 2nd quarter was also tight, with the Cats kicking 6 goals to the Roos 5 to maintain a slight buffer at half time of 9 points. The closeness of the game continued into the 3rd with the Cats edging one more goal ahead, finishing the the quarter with 15-4-94 to the Roos 12-7-79 to push out the lead to 15 points, the highest marging of the game so far. Again the Cats outscored the Roos by a goal in the final quarter (3 to 2) to take the game by 15 points. This win guarantees the Cats second place on the ladder with both of their nearest rivals the Roos and Nomads going down this weekend. BOG for the Cats was Braedon jone and Adam White booted 4 goals, supported by Stuart McAdam who had 4 as well, Rhys Jones with 3 and Bryce O'Conner potted 2. No details of Roos goal kickers was provided.
