The Goannas travelled to Gwawley Oval and Village Green for Round 8 in what shaped as a massive round of games for the club, with all teams looking to build momentum and gain some important wins. The gods greeted us with cold, wet windy conditions, which are conditions the Goannas are well suited to.
Division 4 headed out east to take on UNSW/ES looking for win number 3 for the year, but unfortunately it wasn’t to be. The Uni boys got off to a flyer, and kept the momentum going all day to record a very convincing win.
For the Goannas, Damien McDonald kicked 2, whilst veteran defender Al Fennell was able to snag a rare goal in what was one highlight the team was able to get out of the day. Damien Vassallo continued his impressive season in the ruck to be best on ground, with Jeremy Baird also continuing a fantastic season.
Brenton Ward, Grant Smith, Scott Nolan and Trevor Goddard also performed well for the blue and gold.
Final Scores:
Parramatta: 3.6: 24
Uni NSW: 22.15: 147
Division 3 took on their fellow cellar dwellers, and with both teams looking for their first win of the year, a fierce and competitive match was anticipated. The Goannas were dominating possession early, but were just unable to turn this into scoreboard pressure, whilst the Power were able to make the most of their moves forward.
Despite their best efforts and the use of different combinations, the trend continued throughout the game, resulting in a 62 point loss. John Maniscalco returned after an extended absence from footy, and looked as though he had never left with a best on ground performance. Sal Abdulatif and Ash Mulcahy were rock solid in defence, Dane Ramsey was strong all day whether it was in the backs or forwards, and Nathan McLean and Jason Wilson continued their great seasons in the middle of the ground.
Division 2 took on the undefeated Power, looking to give the Shire side its first defeat as well as getting a true indication of where the team sat in the competition.
The start was fast and furious, with both teams playing high quality football given the conditions. In a very even match, the Goannas were able to keep with the Power throughout the game, and with the 3 quarter time margin only 19 points, the Goannas were hoping to cause an upset and launch the rest of the season. Unfortunately this was not to be, with the Power able to hold on and run out victors by 35 points.
Whilst we didn’t get the result we wanted, the boys put in a great effort and we look forward to taking on the Power again at the end of the year.
Sean Costello and the returning Des Worrell were the goal kickers. Ricky Charles, Todd Waters, Andrew Munns and Tommy Parsons were fantastic in defence all day, while Ben Dyhrberg and Anthony Bishop gave great drive out of the middle.
Final Scores:
Parramatta: 2.6: 18
Power: 7.11: 53
