Round 7 was originally meant to be the round when the Goannas christened their temporary ‘permanent’ home ground for the year at Charles McLaughlin. Unfortunately Mother Nature was not so kind to us, resulting in a shift to Mahoney Park on Sunday, which caused some havoc with player availability, as well as players social lives!!
The Under 18’s started off the day looking for win number 2. In what was a very physical and sometimes spiteful game, the Moorebank boys proved too good on the day. Despite this, the Goannas put in a very spirited effort and showed that they will not back down from anyone.
Division 4 took the field with a familiar face in the enemy ranks, so there was some extra determination to come away with a win. The boys started off very well, however were just unable to convert their good work into points, which allowed Moorebank to break away to a 25 point lead.
The 2nd quarter saw the Goannas convert more of their opportunities, and the boys were able to match the opposition with no change to the margin.
The 3rd quarter was also a tight affair, but Moorebank were able to pull away in the last, resulting in a 46 margin.
For the 2nd week in a row the final score did not do any justice to the endeavour of the team.
Final Score:
Parramatta - 5.7: 37
Moorebank - 12.11: 83
Division 3 took on the Moorebank first grade side, still in search of that elusive first win.
With several players unavailable, the task was made more difficult. Despite their best efforts, the boys were unable to break their duck, with a very strong Moorebank team recording a comfortable win. Despite this, there were some encouraging signs, and the hope that next week’s match against their fellow cellar dwellers might be the watershed game.
Final Score:
Parramatta - 4.4: 28
Moorebank - 20.24: 144
Division 2 took on Balmain in another must win game as the Goannas looked for their 3rd win in a row.
Having only played Balmain in trial games, the opposition was somewhat of an unknown quantity, and the first quarter was a tight affair as both teams got a feel for the others game plan.
Importantly, it was the Goannas who went into the break leading, and from there they gained momentum and dominated the 2nd quarter, opening up a 6 goal lead at half time. Sensing a real opportunity to go for the kill, the Goannas lifted even more in the 2nd half, with some great running football on display as a convincing 68 point win was recorded.
In what was a fantastic team effort, the standouts were Gregga up forward with 6 goals, whilst Webby and Bish ran non stop and provided plenty of drive for the team.
Winning for the 3rd consecutive week will provide terrific momentum for the team, who clash With the 3 teams above them over the next 3 weeks.
Final Score:
Parramatta - 17.10: 112
Balmain - 6.8: 44
