The Mayor of Holroyd, Dr John Brodie, accepted a cheque for $100,000 from the AFL for the Gipps Rd Oval redevelopment on Friday evening. The council is matching the funds provided by the AFL with the Goannas also contributing to the project.
Goanna stalwarts and the juniors turned out in great numbers despite the weather to greet representatives from the AFL and Holroyd City Council.
The inclement weather meant the planned Auskick session did not go ahead, but it also gave everyone a chance to see Goanna Park in all its puddly glory.
The redevelopment of Gipps Rd Oval will see the playing surface stripped back to its foundations, with new turf laid over topsoil with state of the art sprinkler and drainage facilities.
Work will begin within the next few weeks.
Thanks must go to John Perry and Bob Mannion, President and Vice President respectively of the Goannas, for their time and effort to secure the deal which will see Gipps Rd Oval become the best AFL ground in Western Sydney.
John announced that he would be stepping down as President of the Goannas if he is elected to council in the upcoming election.
