The Newcastle City Black Diamond Cup team went down by 53 points to a rampant Cardiff Hawks on Saturday at Bill Elliot Oval.
Heading into the game with a number of big name players back City were expected to put in a good account of themselves however were let down in the second quarter with a 10-goal to nil effort proving the difference.
The Blues were off to a flyer in the first quarter kicking 6 goals with the breeze and looked to be off to a very solid start. This lead was hammered in the second quarter with Cardiff streaming through the middle of the small oval with a number of seemingly unmarked players running amok.
The Blues scored well again in the third quarter but were outdone on the scoreboard and did not fully capitalise on the strong breeze.
The last quarter was a tough and torrid affair with goals hard to come by. The damage was already done and the Blues were unable to work back into the game.
Cleaver, Kemp, Rawnsley, Cotter, Enright and Dawes were all serviceable in a day the Blues would rather forget.
Support from the new "City Fort" was great and good to see a number of First Division guys helping out on the day, especially Webby, Jimbob and Azza.
We now look forward to our first home game at No. 1 for the year, with Ladies Day, Opening of the Grants Bar and a BBQ meal should prove a top day out.
Nelson Bay will be keen to post their first win of the season in the Black Diamond Cup; First Division will be itching after a week off and the Under 18's get an extended Easter break with no game for the youngsters this week.
