In 2006 the Southee - Palfreyman Cup played between Uni and Hutchins was introduced to recognise the contributions of Ric Southee and the Palfreyman family made to the respective clubs. Hutchins has had a number of the Palfreyman family who have contributed over the years.
Ric Southee was a ruckman for Uni while studying in the early 50's and when he returned to Hobart in 1959 after a stint in Townsville became involved with the club again. Whilst lecturing in law Ric became a member of the Committee then President in 1964 - 66. Ric was also the club’s TAFL delegate after his reign as President and was made a life member in 1970. Ric continued his interest in the club and when G B Harrison passed away in 1991, became the club patron until his death in 2006. He also worked tirelessly on the building committees and assisted Graeme Foster in bringing about the Scholarship awarded to students each year. He will also be remembered for producing oranges at the three quarter time breaks and walking his dogs around the oval and popping in Thursday nights to find out who was in the team.
Ric had tremendous passion for the club and commented many times that players were much better when they trained more consistently. He loved the clashes with the Beans, especially when we won!!
