Hayden Burgiel will play his 200th club game against Moe this Saturday (192 Senior & 8 Reserves). He first played senior football for Maffra in 1996 whilst also being in the Gippsland Power squad. At the end of the 1997 season he was drafted by Hawthorn and moved to Melbourne to have a shot at AFL, before returning to Maffra in 2000.
What has followed would have to be one of the most decorated careers in Victorian country football.
He has played in 7 Senior Premierships - 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2009 & 2010.
He has won 2 Trood & Rodda Awards (League B&F) in 2001 & 2004. (premiership year)
Hayden has also won 2 club Best & Fairest awards in 2001 & 2004. (premiership year)
He played for the VCFL team in 2004 & 2005.
He took on the role as senior coach from 2006 to 2008, winning the flag in '06 & '07.
He has coached the GL interleague team for the last 4 years from 2009.
Hayden has this year (2012) resumed the senior coaching role at Maffra and has introduced some modern and innovative techniques to the club.
'H' is a naturally gifted athlete with exquisite kicking skills - he would have to be one of the best kicks of a football in Victoria. All the success that he has had doesn't just happen, he has put in countless hours on the training track & gym to prepare himself for match day. There is no better sight for a country football spectator than to see him with the ball in his hands, streaming down the ground, ready to unleash the weapon that is his left foot on the leading forwards.
Well done Hayden on reaching this milestone - good luck on Saturday.
