CANTERBURY AFL PRESS RELEASE 02.09.19
Jason Beck 100 AFL Canterbury games
CAFL’s favourite clubman cracks a ton.
Jason Beck, number 35 for the Christchurch Bulldogs since 2008, Treasurer of the League, Volunteer award recipient and many years Best Clubman will play his 100th game for the Bulldogs this week.
Hailing from Edendale, Southland, Becky fell in love with Aussie Rules Football in 1982 when a Victorian teacher introduced a Sherrin football for the rugby team to kick after the rugby season.
Whilst watching on the telly as much as possible he wasn’t able to play the game till, he moved to Christchurch in 2008. Embracing the game immediately Becky was a natural backman, running straight to the ball and kicking it long back down field. What you see is what you get – no need for finessing or side stepping when you can run like a steam train through the opposition.
Becky is quite the emotional rollercoaster on the field and there is no better dummy spit than he when things don’t go the Bulldogs way. However he is also a very calm and considerate umpire and therefore balances out his antics. One example would be screaming at the opposition whilst they are lining up for goal and imitating a Neanderthal when he has given a way a free kick in front of goal.
It’s quite entertaining.
Becky’s dedication to the game and CAFL has been rewarded many times with Volunteer of the Year award and the Best Club Man trophy named in his honour because he owned it for many years.
Now as he has clocked up 100 games in 11 years and hitting the mid-century point in life his long suffering wife, Bridget will be relieved she may no longer have to listen to his groans from broken ribs, haematoma’s, twisted ankles or just plain soreness as he hangs up his boots.
He will however still be a feature in the league with umpiring and the development league.
The Beck dream lives on with his son Garrett still playing in the Red and Black. We can only hope that the club song will be sung with as much passion and vigour as Becky has displayed for the last 11 years.
Thankyou for your service and enthusiasm over rhe years to our game Becky -
