M15BT DAY THREE

Yesterday did not get off to a good start. The current bad weather caused by a typhoon up north near the Philippines caused a power outage just before the first game and also caused the Guam teams to forego their planned trip to the beautiful Rock Islands.

The first game started under the small scoreboards at the scorers table run off a generator but fortunately by half time the power was restored. Since it was Palau and Belau men playing they managed to handle the dark conditions OK and by half time Palau had built a 18 point lead. The smaller Belau team managed to reduce the score difference during the third and fourth quarters but their older brothers ran out winners by 85-58. For Palau Marvic Ngchar continued his good form in the tournament to rack up 26 points and he was assisted on the score sheet by Shonty Ubedei with 11. For Belau Medermel Yaoch also continued his high scoring with 23 points and Cody Ngiraungil helped with 14.

The second men’s game saw the Guam teams face off with not much brotherly love shown as each wanted to establish their superiority in this game. Team Guam started best but Team Guahan was always in touch on the score board. With a handy 19 point lead at half time Guam did not “take their foot off the pedal” and while Guahan had a much better scoring second half it was Guam who recorded the win with the score at 85-49. As usual the Guam scoring was evenly spread with Kurtis Silvia continuing to top their list with 14 points and Justin Dimla and Jeddou Antonio had 10 each. For Guahan Jason Frias, Alliurrel and Geo Quichocho each had 8 points.

The women’s games had top billing yesterday with Belau and CNMI facing off at 5.00pm. The under sized and far less skillful Belau team was never in the game in regard to the scoring but their tenacious defence did caused CNMI some headaches at times. In the end CNMI had an easy 76-18 win.

Then it was on to the game of the day with Team Guam meeting up with Team Palau. Many spectators did not give the smaller Palau team much hope for a win but during the first half the Palau team came back time and again to close the score somewhat before Guam established a stronger lead. The frustration in the Gaum camp was showing in the players on court and their coach had to use time-outs to calm the situation. For the first time the young Palau team met with strong physical force in a basketball game and they surprised many with their resilience to handle the physicality. While Palau never gave up, their less experience caused many turnovers and gave Guam easy fast break situations that led to a large diference in the scores. The Guam team continued their full court pressure defence until the end of the game. Guam ran out winners by 94-43. For Guam Kali Benavente had a game high 25 points and Alina Bonto and Aria Perez-Theisen contributed 11 each. Tiny point guard Mahealani Adelbai scored 15 forPalau and Ipolani Kerbekol scored 9.

And so to today’ semi finals where both Guam teams are expected to reach the Gold Medal game tomorrow but the other spot in both the women’s and men’s divisions is definetly up for grabs and we should see some great games in the second semi finals.
