Roman Cress, a 36 year old runner from the Marshall Islands, has competed in the Micro Games about four times. He was known to be the fastest runner in Micronesia. He will be competing in the 100 meter and the 200 meter dash in this year’s Micro Games.
Roman is the first ever Marshallese sprinter to attend the Olympics. It was in 2008 when the Olympics was held in Beijing. Although he didn’t win any medals, he made a personal best.
This year he has brought along his 16 year old daughter, Mariana Cress, who will also be running for the Marshall Islands. This is Mariana’s first time at a Micro Games.
Being an athlete has always been hard work and non-stop training. But for Roman Cress, working out has always been important, but there is always time for sweets. “If you work hard, you can get away with it,” Cress said with a smile.
When asked who his hero was, Roman immediately replied with “Creator of heaven and earth.” It’s evident that Cress holds religion close to his heart and that God helps him to achieve success.
Roman wishes to be a good role model for upcoming athletes. He showed sportsmanship by saying, “Enjoy the friendships that you made as they last forever.”
