Dear Members of Basketball Illawarra, Parents, Friends and Supporters,

We advise that there has been ongoing meetings by teleconference with Basketball New South Wales this week in order to communicate updates regarding COVID-19.

Presently, the meetings indicate that Basketball New South Wales will not resume competitions, courses or programs until 26 April 2020, being after the school holidays.

In addition, the New South Wales Minister for Health has issued a public health order consistent with the Prime Minister’s direction that there not be mass gatherings of 100 or more persons in a single undivided indoor space at the same time.  We attach a copy of that order for your reference and you may see that the penalty for failing to comply with the order includes a fine of up to $11,000.00 plus a fine of $5,500.00 each day for an individual and for a corporation those fines are increased to $55,000.00 and $27,500.00 each day the offence continues.

We take public health and safety seriously and this is a further persuasive reason for  keeping the doors of our stadium closed for the time being, as we cannot ensure that we can limit the number of attendees to less than 100, even if our competitions and programs are not running. We also cannot monitor and implement social distancing guidelines.

Your Board will be meeting again next Thursday, and our continuing response to the present circumstances will be on the Agenda, together with other options for keeping our members engaged with basketball, whilst remaining safe in these challenging times.

We look forward to opening the doors in the future and the sooner we deal with COVID-19, hopefully the sooner that will be.

Graham Lancaster – President
