IMPORTANT UPDATE -2020 Senior Season

The committee of Bendigo Amateur Soccer League met on Wednesday night to discuss the impending 2020 Senior Season following the latest announcement from Football Victoria.

In line with Football Victoria and the direction of Victoria’s Chief Health Officer Professor, Brett Sutton, the difficult, but necessary decision was made to halt the resumption of full-contact training and competition for people aged 19 and over in regional Victoria.

It is with great regret that BASL announce the cancellation of the 2020 Senior Championship season for Division 1, Senior Women and Division 2.

This decision was not an easy one and not taken lightly. After exploring all available options, the committee deemed that this outcome was essential to slow the spread of COVID-19 and keep our community safe.

The committee noted that full training and competition for players aged 18 and under was able to continue and resolved to commence the U18 Youth competition on the weekend of 25th July.

“I am thankful for the significant work put in by the BASL committee, staff, clubs, volunteers and players to this point and acknowledge that for the majority, this decision will come as a major disappointment. I am, however, confident that all involved have done everything in their power to champion the ideal of a Senior competition. We have unfortunately, come to a point where this is no longer viable.”

“I remain encouraged by the addition of the U18 season to our Junior season, that is already underway, and would encourage the football community to pitch in and support their clubs in ensuring these competitions are as successful as possible. More than ever we have an opportunity to give back to the game by supporting the next generation.”

“I look forward to welcoming our senior players, coaches and families back to the game in 2021 to celebrate, both the relaunch of football and BASL’s 50th anniversary”, said BASL President, Aaron Shooter.
