On Wednesday, the Geelong based Minister for Sports and the Lara Member John Eren announced $38,483 would be handed to Geelong clubs through the Government’s Sporting Club Grants Program.

The grants include $4,500 awarded to Drysdale Soccer Club to develop a strategy to help manage future growth, while grants to the other five clubs (Bellarine Sharks, Geelong, Lara United, North Geelong and Surfside Waves) will be used for new uniforms and equipment, training programs for coaches, officials and volunteers, and to help clubs improve operations and administration.

“Whether it’s a uniform or cricket bat, we’re giving grassroots clubs in Geelong the support they need to grow their ranks and help more locals than ever play the sports they love,” Mr Eren told the Geelong Advertiser.

Geelong state Labor MP Christine Couzens said the funding would strengthen local clubs.

“This funding recognises the important role local clubs play in our community — making sure clubs have the resources to enable their members to participate in grassroots sport,” Ms Couzens said.

Grassroots Victorian clubs can apply for grants of up to $1000 for new uniforms and equipment, up to $2000 to improve skills of coaches and officials, and of up to $5000 for initiatives that strengthen their operations and grow their membership, such as developing strategic plans.

The funding will be included in the May 1 State Budget, which is also set to include $241.6 million for women’s and community sport, including more than $100 million to improve facilities and access for women.
