NEWS: GRFC Men’s Division One – Round 4 roundup

BARWON SC returned to the summit of the GRFC Men’s Division 1 competition on the weekend, after annihilating last season’s champions Deakin Ducks 6-0 at Grovedale Reserve in the biggest result of Round 4 on Sunday afternoon.

Oliver Hunniford bagged a hat-trick, while Nathan Drazinic, Ben Hubbard and Hayden Williams all notched singles apiece as the undefeated Blue and Whites returned to the winners’ list following last week’s untimely draw against Breakwater.

Barwon shares top spot with Surfside Waves on 10 points, after the Waves played out a tough 1-1 draw with fellow title contenders, Breakwater Eagles, at the Shell Road Reserve in Ocean Grove on Sunday afternoon.

The home side took the lead in the 34th minute through Niccolo Bassi before Chris Appleford equalised for the visitors in the 82nd minute. The Eagles are also enjoying an undefeated start to the season, but with two wins and two draws they occupy third spot with eight points – two behind the joint competition pacesetters.

On Friday night, newly promoted Lara United leapt into fourth spot on the ladder, following a comprehensive 4-0 drubbing of bottom side Barwon Heads at Village Park to kick start the weekend’s round of matches.

Tom Zaleski opened the scoring in the 29th minute before two goals in three minutes by Conor Mcgrath in the 36th and Eric Lawrence in the 39th minutes effectively killed the game as a contest. Cas Lawrence put the icing on the cake with a 53rd minute goal to round off the 4-0 rout.

Surf Coast jumped into 5th spot on the ladder with a 3-1 win over debutante club FC Leopold at Banyul Warri Reserve. David Cattigan scored the game’s opener as early as the 5th minute, before doubling his afternoon’s tally in the 20th minute. Wedged in between his two goals was the lone Leopold goal, which was struck by Tom Auld after about 15 minutes. Michael Pocklington netted the home side’s third in the 81st minute.

Finally, Rangers and Drysdale played out an entertaining 1-1 draw at Myers Reserve. Zac Harry scored the goal for the home side, while Lyall Bezett netted Drysdale’s goal. Rangers are in 6th spot on the standings, while Drysdale are still searching for their first win under new coach Jason Pickles and find themselves in 8th spot with just two points from their opening four matches.
