NEWS: Surfside defeats Lara to clinch final Play-Off spot in Men’s Div 1

SURFSIDE Waves defeated fifth placed Lara United 2-0 on the final day of the Geelong Region Men’s Division 1 regular season to book a spot in the Top Four Finals’ Series, beginning next weekend.

Jack Pedler scored the opening goal in the first minute of play before teenager Patrick Skuza, who normally plays for the club’s U17s team, doubled the Waves’ lead on 45 minutes.

Despite playing at home, Lara United wasn’t able to find the back of the net and miss out on the end of season playoffs. Nonetheless it was an extraordinarily positive outcome for the Navy Blues to finish the season in 5th spot after earning promotion from last season’s Division 2.

Rangers needed to win against Surf Coast to secure second spot and guarantee a home semi-final. Their task was completed without a ball being kicked as the Torquay side forfeited the game and a 3-0 win was registered to the Dark Blues.

League champions Barwon SC travelled to FC Leopold and easily ran out 4-0 winners against the wooden spooners with Adam Leather, Nathan Drazinic, Sean Mahon and Craig Cameron-Smith all scoring a single apiece.

Cameron-Smith’s goal meant that he jointly took out the Golden Boot award along with Breakwater Eagles duo, Chris Appleford and Brandon Ruthie, who both scored in their side’s 6-1 thumping of Drysdale SC at Howard Glover Reserve.

Appleford scored a hat-trick, while Ruthie netted a double to take both their season’s tallies – as well as Cameron-Smith’s - to 16 goals. Nicholas Clissold was the other scorer for Breakwater, while the lone scorer’s name for Drysdale was not submitted by the club.

In the remaining Round 18 fixture, Barwon Heads defeated Deakin Ducks 4-1 thanks to a double by Rob Armstrong and singles to Andy Ingham and Jason Portch.
