NEWS: Deakin Ducks defeat Barwon in Women's Div 1 Grand Final showdown

DEAKIN Ducks defeated Barwon SC 3-0 in the Geelong Region Women's Division 1 Grand Final showdown at Stead Park on Saturday, with all three goals coming in an action packed second half.

Following a rather subdued opening 45 minute period, with both sides presented with limited goal scoring opportunities as a result of some tight marking from both defensive units, Deakin's midfield engine started to hits its straps and open the supply line to its attackers.

Sarah Fry had a chance in the 57th minute, but her effort from close range floated well over the crossbar.

The boisterous Deakin following didn't have to wait long for the opener, however, with Imogen Pratt's swirling cross slipping through the hands of Barwon Leah Vagnoni and crossing the goaline.

In the 70th minute, Barwon was presented with its best chance of the match to score when Rachel Robertson found space on the edge of the box and her rasping effort smashed against the right upright.

The leagues's Golden Boot Hannah Gordon doubled the Ducks' lead in the 74th minute, spectacularly lobbing Vagnoni from a direct free kick some 25 metres out.

Pratt put the icing on the cake for the Ducks with a similarly spectacular effort from 30 metres out, ensuring the reigning champions would take out back to back Grand Final honours.

After the game, Deakin coach Hannah Gordon was full of praise for the opposing team, who forced her charges to work extremely hard for the end result.

"It was a tough game, a really tough one. They really didn’t let us play our natural game in the first half and to get to the Grand Final the way they did, full credit to them," Gordon said.

Barwon winger Jessica Neskovski was understandably disappointed by the result, but proud of the effort her teammates put in.

“We came into today's match with pretty much nothing to lose and we gave it our absolute best. I'm very proud of the girls, we worked really well, we played cohesively, we gave it our all,” she said.
