CBL review 2019 2020

One can only smile with a great sense of achievement when looking at the way SHBA young CBL Men & Lady Flyers performed in the Country Basketball League 2019- 2020,

The Swan Hill Lady Flyers made it to the semi finals for the third consecutive year and the men Flyers won more games & were more competitive this past season since entering the league 3 years ago.

Some would snigger at the final placing and Swan Hill's win / loss ratios however this season had some significant changes that could have put an end to SHBA entering in the CBL. Both teams had a huge change to their playing rosters with 5 experienced players & previous starters retiring & not able to commit to the season. Then the Lady Flyers coach had to withdraw from coaching a week before the season started.

Both teams worked at making some major connections with the junior squad teams and were well supported with experienced open players. The Swan Hill players came together and were able to put two very competitive teams on the floor. This season has sparked the interest of the whole association and the Lady & Men Flyers have widened the pathway for Swan Hill players to play at a senior level.

This season's CBL players have put back into the SHBA association by not only playing - the Lady Flyers coordinated the Aussie Hoops Girls Program and both teams made themselves available referring & coaching at the domestic level which only makes our association stronger.

The Lady Flyers roster now ranges from 14 - 26years of age & the men's roster, one of the youngest in the league had 3 players over 20. It was a season of learning to play against bigger more physical bodies and against the best players from other Country Victoria associations, but a lesson valuable and vital for Swan Hill's CBL future.

Next season will certainly be an exciting year if we can retain the playing groups from this season and also keep the association engagement between the junior & senior levels - then everybody has a win.

SHBA would like to thank both coaches - Sharon & Tess Denham, the team managers, the players, the player sponsors, the Swan Hill community for their support, the Guardian and the scorebench volunteers.
