LeGassick Goannas Fairytale Continues

The Cinderella story that is the Gold Coast LeGassick Goannas continues for one more week after a stirring 91 – 81 point win against the title favorites the Northside Wizards in Boondal tonight.

In typical finals fashion, both teams took their time to find their strides in what was an ugly first couple of minutes. However, the floodgates opened shortly after and the Goannas unleashed a barrage of three-point bombs shooting an incredible 100% on 5 of 5 for the quarter and took a 30 – 22 point lead at the first break.

The Goannas played perfect team basketball and extended their lead to 14 points at the main break and never looked back. Throughout the second half the lead ballooned out to as much at 20 points and a Wizard comeback was imminent.

When superstar Chris Goulding hit the deck hard and collected his fifth personal foul the celebrations were starting to escalate.

Wizards forward Anthony Petrie was in stellar form in defeat with 39 points and 13 rebounds and nearly stole the game back and guard Josh Darragh added 16 points.

However, it was the obvious team play that lead to the Goannas victory spearheaded by Shaun Gleeson with 26 points and big man Jaydan Tom adding 16 points and 14 rebounds.

The Goannas seemed to answer every run from the Wizards with precise offence and the extra pass to the open player. On a night where it seemed no Goannas player was interested in their own personal statistics but in simply winning the game, they have been rewarded with an unlikely trip to the Final Four weekend in Rockhampton next week.

“No one gave us a chance at the start of the year,” head coach Mick Conlon said.

“That’s been ok with us. We dropped games we should have won throughout the season, but bottom line is we are off to the Final Four and that’s all that matters right now,” he concluded.

In a fairytale season, the Goannas were tipped by many to finish in the second half of the ladder and miss post season action all together. Some major changes took place in the off season including new management and a winning culture is slowly but surely being restored in believed in by the Gold Coast faithful.

The Goannas will fly out of Brisbane next Friday morning and take on the Rockhampton Rockets at 8:30pm with the winner advancing to the QBL Grand Final.
