The LeGassick Goannas have returned to the winners circle with a hard fought 85 – 80 point win over a weary Brisbane Capitals at The Southport School today however the Gliders were defeated 97 – 74.

The Capitals burst out of the block to pour in 32 first quarter points and the Gliders had no answer to their fast break game, scoring just 17 points at the end of the period.

The lead was pushed further at the main break with the Capitals enjoying a 22 points lead and the game was all by over.

Gliders captain Jade Abele worked tirelessly with 19 points and 11 rebounds with frontcourt partners Pip Connell and Sarah Petrie adding 13 and 11 points respectively.

Bree Griffiths also added 13 points, 7 rebounds and dished out 3 assists in the 23 points loss.

“I know we lost, but I’m happy with how we went about it today,” Gliders head coach Chris Riches said.

“I feel we are getting better and today we just got jumped early and couldn’t get over that hump.”

The LeGassick Goannas put last week’s debarkle behind them with a tough, grinding five-point win.

The Goannas enjoyed a four-point lead at quarter time but only managed to extend it by a further one-point at the main break leading 41 - 36.

Anthony Olah made his much anticipated return after landing from college last week and made an instant impact. In 24 minutes of play, Olah hit 18 points and grabbed 6 rebounds enroute to the LeGassick Most Valuable Player award.

Shaun Gleeson led with 19 points with Shaun Tilby adding 14 silky smooth points. Goannas captain Dave Gurney was physically sick with stomach flu and could only manage 6 minutes of play before having to leave the stadium and return home.

The Goannas win was even more impressive because of the unavailability of inspirational veteran point guard Adam Darragh with a tore hamstring and enforcer Jason Aucoin with a sore knee complaint.

“It was definitely a tough game especially with Adam, Jason and Dave not able to play,” Goannas head coach Mick Conlon said.

“But we had Anto (Olah) return, step up and really brought his A game so we were able to compensate for that. Plus Gleeson really led well also,” he concluded.
