QBL & D-League Gold Coast Season Launch
Last Saturday night the Gold Coast Basketball community past and present revisited the Spiritual Home of Basketball here on the Gold Coast, The Southport Stadium on Lawson Street for a Season Launch/Funny Money night.
In an unpresidented move, both Gold Coast Basketball Waves and Runaway Bay Seahawks D-League teams were invited and participated in the Launch which coupled as a Funny Money (fake casino) night.
The QBL and D-League players were transformed into croupiers for the night running the blackjack, roulette and crown and anchor tables which built up to the end of night auction that saw the number one prize of an accommodation package at the Marriott Hotel Surfers Paradise, for a whopping $198,000,000!
"It was extremely important to have this event this year to really put the Gliders and Goannas back on the map," organiser Joe Tertzakian said. "People have forgotten about this and we have to ride the wave the Blaze created this season to keep the excitement going. There are people out there who crave basketball in the winter months but don't know about us. We're changing that!"
"There are so many former Gold Coast basketball players in this region who still live here but just don't come to the games anymore for one reason or another. I just want to bring these guys back this year, socialise at our home games and be recognised for what they've contributed to this region," he concluded.
This process has clearly begun with more then 300 filing into the Southport Stadium made up of many former players who have made this region what is it today.
With strong support from the Gold Coast Blaze, the Gliders/Goannas are set to make huge changes in 2010 with the most notable, bring all home games back to The Southport School (TSS) Winchester Street, Southport.
The three different basketball entities on the Gold Coast, the QBL Gliders and Goannas, the D-League Waves and Runaway Bay Seahawks have vowed to work together for the betterment of the sport while still harnessing a healthy on court rivalry.
