U18 Championships Kevin Coombs Cup Day 2

SA Country began well and responded to NSW Country efforts to get back into the game.  Bald was again prominent with 22 points, J Walsh went close to a double double with 19 points and 9 rebounds, Makoi made a valuable contribution with 9 points.  Bald leads the competition with the highest number  (8 in two games) of three pointers at 56%.  SA Country maintained their dominannce in the paint (42 points) and valuable contribution from the bench (21 points).  SA Country were victorious 73 - 47 and lead the competition in first place after day two.  Tomorrow provides the biggest challenge to date with a double header against Queensland South at 9.15am and Victoria Metro at 7.00pm.  If Coach Petty and his support team can ensure the players stay healthy and recover well, a good result against Queensland South will provide an easier path towards the finals and ensure a good contest against Victoria Metro.

SA Country Women faced the inevitable task of playing perennial champions Victoria Metro Women in their second game of the tournament.  Alhtough you would not have known it, as SA Country's hard work and perseverance paid off keeping pace with Victoria Metro for three quarters.  Victoria Metro started to build a lead in the final quarter, eventually winning 90-52.  The scoreline certainly did not reflect the tenacity of SA Country for most of the match.  Levy led SA scorers with 10 points, followed by Briggs with 8 and Wintter falling short of a double double with 7 points and 8 rebounds.  Stratford didn't have her best shooting game but found a way to have an impact collecting 7 rebounds and providing 4 assists.  A dismal free throw display (8%) by SA Country made the task more difficult.  SA Country can take a lot out of the game in preparation for their next game against NSW Metro at 3.15pm tomorrow.
