Coronavirus Update 18/03/20

At a press conference this morning the Prime Minister (PM) made a number of announcements in relation to the current COVID-19 pandemic.

Effective today, the government has introduced a ban on non- essential gatherings of more than 100 people in indoor areas.  In outdoor areas the ban remains for non-essential gatherings of more than 500 people. This is the first time we have heard a differentiation between indoor and outdoor gatherings.  The government reiterated the need for social distancing.

We have not received any further advice from Basketball Australia (BA) at this time regarding the recent announcements.

Basketball SA (BSA) has advised they are meeting daily with other Member States and BA to discuss the evolving landscape in relation to COVID-19, government announcements and the impact on Basketball in this country.  On receipt or advice of announcements from the government and/or BA, both BSA and SACBCI discuss these matters regularly within our own teams to determine a balanced and appropriate response.

BSA has advised they will now provide an update via social media platforms and the BSA website daily at 9.30am and 3.00pm.

SACBCI will continue to provide updates as they are received direct to Associations with a view to Associations sharing the information with members.  We will only place updated information on our social media platform if it is relevant to the general public.

Each Association will need to consider the advice from BA and the government prior to making an informed decision on whether Basketball in your local community should continue.  All Associations are required to comply with the mandatory advice from the government relating to non essential gatherings and social distancing.

We understand this is a difficult time for everyone and we ask that people respect the informed decisions we all make and support each other through this state of emergency.  Everyone is attempting to the do the very best they can with the information they have while balancing the needs of the Basketball and general community, this is not easy when we are in unprecedented environment with the information changing regularly.

Please check in with each other, support each other and call out disrespectful behaviour.

Regards,
Julie Anderson
Executive Officer
SACBCI
